An Introduction to IPSOS, the Interactive Physics Sonification System

Dr. Scott Wilson and Dr. Konstantinos Vasilakos will offer a workshop using IPSOS, the Interactive Physics Sonification System, a web-based application which uses data from the Large Hadron Collider, at CERN in Switzerland to make new sound and music. The app provides an interface for interactive exploration of the data, allowing users to create their own sounds and musical improvisations in real time, engaging with concepts from physics and sound synthesis.

TEC 2018: Exploring values and democracy in the classroom

In the context of the global refugee crisis and the rise of populism, violent extremism and debates about integration, there is growing interest in developing strategies to support teachers and students in engaging in difficult ethical conversations about identity, beliefs, democratic values, diversity, belonging and violence, in order to establish a firm foundation for inclusive and tolerant schools. In the framework of the ERASMUS+ project The Enquiring Classroom, the workshop «ΤEC 2018: Exploring values and democracy in the classroom» will look into techniques for targeted capacity building in classrooms, enabling teachers:

1. To use the tools of philosophical enquiry to engage in complex ethical discussions about contemporary questions and to support students’ capabilities in this regard.
2. To promote peer knowledge transfer and exchange of pedagogical content, strategies and practice to support students’ lived encounters with philosophical and religious thought, in particular by demonstrating how to activate a ‘lived values’ approach to religions and beliefs.
3. To develop a comprehensive peer-informed skill-set for teachers that supports careful and sensitive facilitation of complex issues.
4. To mobilise arts-based methodologies to support expression and inclusion in diverse classrooms, and to provide alternative ways of exploring and articulating ideas and experience.

In this year’s TEC event, we invite Efthimios Chatziefstathiou, Headmaster at 2nd Primary School of Agia Varvara, to present his work ‘Reflections and Masquerades: empathy and “The game of disguise” excerpt of the novel “Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique¨ (Friday; or, the Other Island) by Tournier’. It focuses on activities for the introduction to otherness in multicultural classrooms and schools with newly arrived students.

Learning Science Through Theater

The educational activity “Learning Science Through Theater” is an initiative of Science View based on the pedagogical framework of the European project CREATIONS that is organised for 5^th year in a row in cooperation with other institutions such as Faculty of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology of National and Κapodistrian University of Athens and Elliniogermaniki Agogi. Students from all grades (primary and high schools) are expected to dramatize scientific notions from their school curriculum and stage a theatrical performance related to STEM. Main objective of this activity is to connect science with aspects of art and enhance students’ interest in science.

This workshop is mainly addressed to primary and secondary school teachers who want to deliver scientific knowledge to their students in a more creative and interactive way. It will explain the pedagogical framework and provide guidance, advice, examples and hands on activities on how to implement the methodology in the classroom.

The iMuSciCA Experience: Learning Science through and with Music

iMuSciCA or ‘Interactive Music Science Collaborative Activities’ is part of the educational movement of STEAM, which aims at bringing Arts at the heart of the school curriculum to cultivate creative skills of young people, alongside with the knowledge and skills they acquire in STEM fields (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

iMuSciCA is addressing current requirements in education for new pedagogical methodologies and innovative educational technologies by supporting active, discovery based, personalised, and more engaging learning and providing students and teachers with opportunities for collaboration, co-creation and collective knowledge building.

iMuSciCA therefore clearly focuses on the systematic integration of a suite of Software Tools and Services with especially designed Educational Scenarios for teaching and learning STEM in Lower and Upper Secondary Education. The Workbench of iMuSciCA is the central access point to several enabling technologies such as DrAwME, Performance Sampler, Tone Synthesizer, 3D Design, Printing and Interaction, Sonification, Math Editor, Geometry & Algebra a well as supporting music and sound analysis and visualisation tools.

Through the Activity Environments applied in dedicated Educational Scenerios, iMuScicA provides students with new opportunities to master core academic content on STEM subjects alongside with the development of Deeper Learning through their engagement in music activities

The Workshop of iMuSciCA at the Final Conference of CREATIONS (or Developing an Engaging Science Classroom) will provide the participants with hands-on and interactive experiences of the Activity Environments and Educational Environments as developed by the project so far. The structure of the iMuSciCA Workshop will be as follows.

Everything is number: A walk through Art and numbers

In this workshop the participants will be introduced the mathematical background of the pictures that comprise the “Everything is number” exhibition. They will learn how to develop ideas from first sketches to accomplished picture and also techniques for playing with mathematics. Last but most important, will be given useful hints regarding how they could provide an effective and meaningful tour of the exhibition.
